Hello all, it’s been a while after posting an article here. I have received lot of request about How to use Prime License Manager (PLM Server) and the license architecture of Cisco Unified Communications Manager 11.5 and Cisco Unity Connection 11.5.
Cisco Unified Communications Licensing after 9.X version till 12.X is pretty similar via Cisco License Manager. CUCM 12 uses entirely different method of licensing called Smart Licensing.
The reason being posting this article here about Cisco PLM even after the release of CUCM 12 release because there are still a quite large number of users in the market who uses previous versions of Cisco Call Manager other than 12.X
Well, let’s talk about PLM,
What is Cisco Prime License Manager?
Cisco Prime License Manager (formerly Cisco Enterprise License Manager or Cisco License Manager) provides hassle free, enterprise-wide based license management across major UC products (CUCM, CUCM and CER). Cisco Prime License Manager handles license fulfillment, allocation and provides universal usage status and reports.
Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM) also supports multiple clusters and multiple versions of products, such as Cisco Unified CM versions 9.X, 10.X and 11.X (Not 12.X)
Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM) is co-installed with your Cisco Unified Communication Manager installation. You can also install another instance of Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM).
Now, let’s see how to use Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM) to install license (demo) for an 11.5 Cisco Call Manager Custer.
When you login to CUCM, you can see license warning message if you haven’t configured any License for the cluster.
Step 1: Login to Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM)
Browse the IP of CUCM and select Cisco Prime License Manager. Login with the admin credentials.
You will be navigated to the dashboard to Cisco Prime License Manager (PLM)
Step 2: Add a Product Instance
In order to manage any UC Application, we would need to add it to the Prime license manager.
Go to Product Instances >> Add
Fill the following information and click OK
After adding the product instance, click Synchronize Now
After successful synchronization, you can see the license status on the product. I have just installed a fresh CUCM 11.5 hence it is displayed Demo License.
Step 3: Generating License Request using Cisco Prime License Manager
Now we gonna install Evaluation License to CUCM 11.5. This method is pretty same as production license installation as well.
Go to License >> Fulfilment >> Other Fulfilment Options >> Generate License Request
You will get a text string, copy that and click the Cisco License Registration hyper link.
Now, you are at the Product License Registration page.
Click Get License >> Demo and Evaluation >>
Unified Communication Products >> Cisco Unified Communications and Cisco Emergency Responder >> Next
Paste the copied string there, then select the Version (11.X) and enter required license count.
Enter your mail ID and select user ID (License file will be delivered to this mail ID)
Agree the terms and condition, click Submit
You will be navigated to License Request Status
Click Download and save the file.
Note: You will also receive an email with license attached.
Step 4: Installing Cisco Call Manager License via Cisco Prime License Manager
Go to Licenses >> Other Fulfilment Options >> Fulfil License from file
Browse your license
Click Install, you will get Installation Successful message.
Now, navigate to the CUCM Administration interface and verify the license warning has been disappeared.
Step 5: Check License Usage from Cisco Prime License Manager
Go to Licenses menu in Cisco Prime License Manager > Usage
You may also see the license usage statistics at the Dashboard of Cisco Prime License Manager.
